Headteacher View

Here is where you will find the thoughts and views from our headteacher Mr Pidgeon

Tuesday 4th July 2017

Well today has certainly seen it all in school – a full transition day for all our Y6 students from Newlands, Springside and the mainstream school attending Redwood for the day. Our Y11s visited REEC and other groups took part in various transition activities! A well-prepared programme put into place by staff – a great day all round! Parents evening was a huge success with many parents/carers visiting form tutors and subject specialists to find out about the progress made by the young people which have been reported on a new report format from parents. A group of Y9s visited Blackpool Zoo today and certainly had a day they will never forget – especially when a seagull wanted Alyson`s sandwich out of her mouth !! What an experienced TA Alyson is – she could also see the funnyside!! Like a scene from ` The Birds ` comes to mind !!

Friday 30th June 2017

Well done on the students and staff who camped out on Thursday night as part of the planning for D O E award! The real one is coming soon !! Great results and pupil feedback from the Greater Manchester Disability Games in which Redwood had a team of 19 students – 11 students represented the school in the football competition, and 8 in athletics! The footballer played 14 games ( nearly a full season ! ) and won 10 and lost 4 matches! I think Rochdale, City and United would settle for that in the new season! A great day for Minnie winning silver medals in 100m and long jump, Brooke won gold in slalom challenge and shot putt and Jack and Harry came jt 3rd in long jump !! Josh got gold in the shot putt ( and proceeded to show me on his return to school ) and Michael took silver in long jump! A brilliant day all round! Well done to students and staff!

Tuesday 27th June 2017

Super Sing at the Lowry has been happening today with our school choir taking part! SLT have been trained as fire wardens this week and Mrs. Haworth really enjoyed wearing the fire helmet whilst putting the fire out! So versatile!

Friday 23rd June 2017

There is so much happening in school at the moment it is difficult to keep pace with it all! For example this week we have had various trips out, information on pupil progress reports has gone out to parents/carers, transition visits for Year 11 students to REEC and a group of students taking part in ` Can`t Dance Can ` at the Gracie Fields Theatre! Oh and a full fire evacuation practice procedure which was carried out brilliantly by all concerned! As ever the input from staff and students has been fantastic!

Huge congratulations to David Butterworth who attended a very special ceremony today at Twickenham to collect his Sky Sports ` Teacher of the Year Award ` after being nominated by Youth Sports Trust. This is a testament to the wonderful work David leads in giving our youngsters the best opportunities in PE, Sports, and Health related activities. Also attending was Gary Oliver who was highly commended by the judges as ` Inspirational Journey ` for a student! Well done to both! A big thank you to those staff who gave up their time this week to ensure that the Post 16 youngsters on residential had a great time! Despite the weather this week, the group, based at Moorland Home have enjoyed a great variety of activities including a very windy visit to Blackpool, a visit to Sealife, the cinema to see Wonder Woman, socialised in the local pub and many outdoor activities! Sounds a great week!

Thursday 8th June 2017

What a wonderful selection of activities took place today as part of our British Values Day and to coincide with the General Election! Our schedule also included a vote for Head Boy and Head Girl and the successful candidates announced in a special assembly! Well done to everybody who took part in celebrating all aspects of the British Values.

It was good to welcome all students and staff back to school after the easter break! The summer term is always very busy and this one is no exception as the focus clearly is planning for September – my main aim will be to work closely with Clare John, head designate, as we look to get the school organised for the new term in September with potentially a building program on the site ! Updates will be provided as this develops! But for now, let`s get on with the summer term!

Monday 27th March 2017

There are some days you really do not know what to expect and this is one of them ! It was great to receive a letter from Her Majesty following a lesson the inclusion group carried out with a teacher, Sarah Grimes,  which included the pupils writing a letter to the Queen with a series of questions. What a lovely reply and I know the pupils and staff will be delighted receiving such a wonderful letter !

Following on from the swimmers yesterday, this morning a group of students from across the school, 34 to be precise, attended the Rochdale Youth Festival of Performing Arts at the town hall main room, and were awarded 85 and 96 points out of 100 for ` Lunar ` and ` Solar ` groups respectively! The feedback from the adjudicators was extremely positive with fantastic comments and I know that Amanda M and the staff team are quite rightly so proud of these youngsters! Great ambassadors for the school with great talents!

Tuesday 21st March 2017

Fantastic news today to hear about our swimming team who represented Redwood and Rochdale in the Greater Manchester Winter Games and came away with Team Gold winners ! An amazing achievement and I was really pleased to meet the squad on return to school showing off their gold medals ! Also congratulations to James B who became a father today as baby George entered the world ! Best wishes to all the family !

Wednesday 15th March 2017

Today was another example of how we provide our youngsters with a varied, broad and balanced curriculum with numerous opportunities to develop their skills and interests. Firstly the morning session had 44 rowers taking part in the GM Rowing Championships at Robins Park, Wigan, and the school had a huge number of gold medal winners ! Not only achieving their personal best but youngsters also being great ambassadors for the school ! Following that as part of the citizenship focus on laws and justice, a presentation by PC Patterson and the opportunity to ask him questions and also have a closer look at the police car ! A great day all round and thanks to numerous staff members for making the day so special in so many ways !

Friday 17th March 2017

It was good to give my successor as headteacher of Redwood , Ms Clare John, an opportunity to meet students and staff during our first transition visit today ! As ever the welcome given to all visitors, was great and I know that Clare thoroughly enjoyed her visit. Here`s to the next part of the transition programme ! The school turned to many shades of green today as staff and students focussed on St Patrick Day activities and celebrations !

Wednesday 1st March 2017

The school can celebrate another award today following the Youth Sports Trust annual conference where Redwood was presented with a national award for ` Outstanding SEND School 2017 ` . This is a fantastic achievement and follows on from the recent positive Ofsted report and highlights the great work taking place at Redwood by staff and students ! On a personal note, later this week the interviews for the headteacher post are taking place – no doubt an experience I will find surreal !

Monday 27th February 2017

As ever it was wonderful to see all our young people today after the half term break ! The next five weeks until easter promises to be very busy with a variety of activities and programmes taking place in school. Let`s hope the weather shows some signs of becoming spring ! Great to hear about the half term holiday programme and the input from students and staff ! My break was good and finished up watching United win the EFL Cup at Wembley yesterday !

Friday 3rd February 2017

Today the pupil voice was as prominent as usual with a variety of items discussed at the Council meeting ! Issues raised included school dinners and the creation of a small working group to meet with our catering manager, feedback on the positive Ofsted inspection with particular focus on the role students played and an update on the building proposals, which as ever, promotes some interesting discussions ! Further points discussed included wet breaks, lunchtime clubs, the role of the Council in the Headteacher recruitment process, the Friendship Charter and initial discussions regarding the Year 11 Prom ! All in all a very lively and useful meeting to listen to the pupils views !

Wednesday 25th January 2017

Following a meeting earlier in the week of all key parties, it now appears that the proposed building programme is likely to commence in mid March when final details are confirmed ! The REEC students work experience placements are varied and I am sure they will find their opportunities interesting as we continue to prepare them for adulthood ! Thanks to the staff team for their hard work to establish the placements !

Monday 23rd January 2017

What a great day we have had with our Celebratory Enrichment Day as a ` thank you ` to all the students for their fabulous work and attitude we see in school ! A huge thanks also to the staff team who have organised such a memorable event including a skating rink, Skylight Circus, Zoo lab, Kaizen Do, Music Sound workshop, boxing, Just Dance, Bouncy Castle and Commando Joes ! Brilliant atmosphere around school as ever today !

Thursday 5th January 2017

It is wonderful today to be able to publically acknowledge the outcomes of the recent Ofsted report following our inspection on 7th and 8th December. The report can be found on our website but it highlights that Redwood is judged as a good school in the judgement areas of overall effectiveness, leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment, outcomes for pupils and 16 to 19 study programmes. We are judged as ` outstanding ` in personal development, behaviour and welfare. This is a testament to the hard work by all the staff and our wonderful youngsters ! We will celebrate this report over the next few weeks !

Wednesday 4th January 2017

A very happy new year to all our students, parents, staff and governors as we start back after the Christmas break ! It was so good to see all the youngsters with their stories and conversations on their festive break ! There is so much to look forward to in the spring term and so many developments within school as we start to prepare the planning for September. Today we had some Y6 students visit school as part of their possible placements here at Redwood in September. Before we know it, it will be upon us !

Monday 12 December 2016

Following the very busy week last week which saw an inspection and the Xmas Fayre, this weeks` festive arrangements are likely to result in another programme of activities suitable for the time of the year. This will include showcase performances, Xmas dinner, various trips out, Wardle Brass Band and Xmas Jumper Day supporting the charitable cause. I know it will be a wonderful week ahead for all students and staff !

Thursday 8th December 2016

Thank you to all our parents, carers and friends of Redwood for your support at the Xmas Fayre yesterday – what a fantastic event with a wonderful turn out ! It was great to see all the hard work of the team in school and all the support by the young people who were magnificent ! A real team effort by everybody involved with such a lovely atmosphere which the Ofsted inspectors commented on ! When we have the final total raised we will notify everybody . Many thanks again for everybody`s support !

Wednesday 30th November 2016

What a fantastic honour for the school and particularly one of our former students, Gary, who we are proud to include on our ` Classroom to Staffroom ` professional development programme, to attend the House of Lords yesterday. Gary and staff were invited to take part and make a short speech in relation to Redwood`s involvement and lead in the ` Inclusive PE Training Programme ` as sponsored by Sainsbury`s. This was a great opportunity for Redwood to celebrate our role and the impact of the training and to also meet with a range of partners including Baroness Sue Campbell and Ellie Simmonds ! We await the film of the event to share across school !

Tuesday 18th October 2016

What a fabulous turn out for the parents evening tonight to discuss how our students have settled into this new school year. The pastoral meetings with parents are vital in establishing effective communication links and relationships . It was wonderful to hear the number of positive comments from parents and carers and to develop some ideas. As ever the support from parents and carers is excellent and I would like to thank them for their input during this half term. On a separate point, we will be sending a letter to all parents with details of two parent governor vacancies which have arisen recently. I hope that parents /carers can give this serious thought and if you would like more details please contact me at school. It is a wonderful opportunity to support the continuing development of the school from a parents perspective.

Tuesday 27th September 2016

A big ` well done ` to all concerned with the news today that for the fourth year running Redwood has been awarded the School Games Gold Mark Award as a result of the recent visit to study the documentation and discussions with key staff in the PE and Health and Well Being Team ! A testament to the opportunities our students have to develop their physical well being and to try a variety of sports programmes. Great feedback from staff after the signing workshop presented by Louise, Sue, Julie and Caroline was delivered to staff – the next plan is to run another parents group training which was so well received the last time it was run. Popped into the Youth Club tonight and a really happy group of youngsters taking part in a variety of activities with staff support !

Monday 26th September 2016

A really positive start to the week with the news that 70 students attended the various after school and youth clubs last week. This is a very good start in the first week of the clubs. Also great feedback on one of our REEC students who was working on the reception last week and a contractor thought the student was a full time receptionist she was so confident and assured ! Well done Sajjida – a very impressive testimonial received and a great ambassador for the REEC ! I am look forward this week to discover who will be elected to the Student Council for this academic year and also the outcomes of the interviews on Wednesday for the Head Boy and Head Girl ! Good luck to all those who have an interview with Mrs Haworth this week and I look forward to working with you !

Tuesday 20th September

At the start of a new term I always like to see the after school clubs and youth clubs get back into action and give students the opportunities to take part in a variety of extra curricular activities ! Also this week I am looking forward to finding out which students have self nominated or have been nominated for Head Girl and Head Boy. The pupil voice has always been such an important aspect of Redwood and this is another addition to our systems. Talking of student voice, today three of our Post 16 students took part in a discussion with inspectors as part of the LA Ofsted Inspection with the focus on preparing for adulthood – well done to Rhianne, Hamza and Christopher, our REEC students, who volunteered to take part !

Friday 16 September

Today has seen some of our youngsters taking part in curriculum sessions with an author as part of the literacy and creative curriculum ! Great feedback from all concerned and we are do lucky to have had this opportunity in school !
It was great to see all our secondary students taking part in the introduction of the Achievements Assembly today led by Mrs Haworth, who explained about the various awards students from Y7 to Y11 can be accessed ! I'm sure a great number of students will be taking this opportunity to put themselves forward for the various positions ! Good luck to all and enjoy the weekend !

Tuesday 13th September

I was delighted to hear the news that a group of 12 students have volunteered to become part of the Young Leaders programme for this academic year ! This is excellent news and gives the youngsters the opportunity to demonstrate leadership skills, plan a community project and to act as role models for other students. Today I am pleased to welcome another ex student and Young Leader to the school to continue his career development and commence his TA apprenticeship following a planning meeting. We welcome Gary, previous chair of student council and ambassador for the school, into his career pathway which sees him develop from classroom to staffroom ! Gary will commence his duties early next week !

Monday 12th September

A new week starts with some new procedures as we attempt to reduce the journey times home for some of our youngsters at the end of the day. With effect from today we will call eight specific buses first of those students who have the greatest distance to travel. This hopefully will give these mini buses the opportunity to beat the traffic at the bottom of Hudson`s Walk. This plan is in conjunction with the LA and I would ask that parents / carers be patient as we endeavour to overcome this issue, and also plan for the new build programme in October which will also impact on the end of day travel arrangements. On a separate issue, I have had to take a great deal of witty banter from students and staff following the derby result at the weekend ! No complaints – as long as it is not a regular thing !!

Thursday 8th September

After three days of students working with form tutors to establish the new routines in class, today saw the timetable commence across school allowing students to take part in a variety of subjects, physical, musical and independence life skills to meet their individual programmes ! It was great to see everybody hard at it and working so well ! Our first newsletter of this term has gone out to parents and carers giving an overview of developments. Really enjoyed being on the yard today at lunchtime with students chilling and chatting with them. We are hoping to establish a new system at the end of the day to make sure that the mini buses get away as soon as possible to avoid the Hudson`s Walk traffic ! This will start next Monday 12 September. Finally students so sensible when we practiced the fire evacuation procedure and line up on the MUGA !

Tuesday 6th September 2016

As we continue to welcome our new students to Redwood and they begin to find their way around school, it was my delight to welcome to our school an ex pupil, Anthony, as part of his career aspiration to become a teaching assistant level 1. It always gives me great pleasure to see former students develop from ` classroom to staffroom` and we are delighted that Anthony is working part of the Team Redwood similar to Karen who is working in Post 16. Thank you to staff for your flexibility and support as the new routines begin to embed at the start of the term.

Monday 5th September 2016

Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all our youngsters and staff to a new school year and hope that everybody enjoyed the summer break ! It was fantastic today to see our new Year 7 students settling in so well into their new environment with the help of staff and student buddies ! A few issues to address but that is natural in the first week as students and staff get use to new routines, timetables and plans. Nevertheless a really positive first day ! A special welcome also to our newly qualified teachers, Charlotte, Oliver, Dawn and Sarah who started their careers today at Redwood ! Welcome to Team Redwood !
