British Values and SMSC

At Redwood School, we are committed to promoting British Values and supporting pupils’ Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development as part of our wider aim to prepare learners for life in modern Britain. These values are embedded across school life and support our pupils to become confident, respectful and responsible members of society.

10 Key Strengths of British Values at Redwood:

Democracy in Action

Learner Council elections mirror the British electoral system, including secret ballots and campaigning.

Pupil Voice

Multiple communication methods (speech, signing, symbols, assistive tech) ensure every learner’s opinion is valued and heard.

Community Engagement

Learners participate in borough-wide democratic processes, including voting for the Youth Parliament and attendance at the Lord Lieutenant’s Youth District Committee.

Rule of Law

Clear behaviour policy, Redwood’s Values demonstrate our expectations, and structured rewards promote understanding of rules and consequences.

Practical Learning of Laws

Road safety, e-safety, and visits from external agencies reinforce the importance of laws for safety and wellbeing.

Individual Liberty Promoted

Opportunities for choice in learning, vocational options at Post 16, assemblies, and student-led initiatives encourage independence.

Personal Responsibility

Enrichment lessons empower students to set personal goals and take ownership ofprogress.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance

Inclusive ethos where diversity is celebrated through curriculum, assemblies, and enrichment days.

Cultural Awareness

Teaching about different faiths and festivals (Diwali, Easter, Chinese New Year) through My Identity and themed activities.

Community and Charity Links

Active involvement in fundraising events and local projects fosters empathy andsocial responsibility.
