We support learners to develop independence across all areas of school life. Through tailored support and everyday opportunities, learners build confidence, decision-making skills, and self-reliance.

Our approach helps learners gain the skills they need to manage their own routines, take initiative, and prepare for life beyond school.

Key Strengths of Independence at Redwood:

Significant Growth in Independent Travel Training

68 journeys trained this year (up from 57), representing a 19% increase.

Doubling of New Independent Traveller’s

10 new learners trained compared to 5 last year, a 100% increase.

Wide Range of Destinations

Training covers multiple sites including Redwood, REEC, Middleton Campus, Heywood Campus, Internship bases, and work placements.

Strong Emphasis on Preparing for Adulthood

Independence is a golden thread throughout provision, supporting life skills and confidence.

Collaboration with Rochdale LA

Joint work to train learners and resolve transport barriers, ensuring access to education.

Responsive Support for New Sites

Independent Travel Team deployed to help learners adapt to new locations during Autumn Term.

Current Engagement

22 learners actively participating in the Independent Travel programme, showing ongoing commitment.

Integration with Work Experience and Internships

Travel training linked to real-world destinations, reinforcing employability skills.

Proactive Problem-Solving

Addressing transport challenges to improve attendance and learner access.
